Four Bahe Cook Cantley & Jones PLC attorneys have been elected or re-lected to serve on the Board of Governors of the Kentucky Justice Association (formerly the Kentucky Academy of Trial Attorneys).

Shawn Cantley, Vanessa Cantley, and Larry Jones were re-elected to the Board. Andrew Downey was elected to the Board for the first time.

The Kentucky Justice Association recently voted to change its name from the Kentucky Academy of Trial Attorneys to better reflect what it's members do, rather than who they are. The members of the Kentucky Justice Association work to make sure any person who is injured by the misconduct and negligence of others can get justice in the courtroom, even when taking on the most powerful interests.

This is more important now than ever because large corporations dominate the political process. There are certainly good politicians and government officials, but politicians and governmental officials can be influenced and in some cases essentially bought. But, a corporate defendant cannot promise members of a jury a job or influence them with anything but the evidence in the case. This is why Thomas Jefferson referred to the jury as the cornerstone of democracy.

Bahe Cook Cantley & Jones attorney Larry Jones was re-elected this weekend to the Kentucky Justice Association's Board of Governors. The Kentucky Justice Association is made up of attorneys who work to make sure that any person who is injured by the misconduct and negligence of others can get justice in the courtroom, even when taking on the most powerful interests. In addition to Larry Jones, three other Bahe Cook Cantley & Jones attorneys (Shawn Cantley, Vanessa Cantley, and Andy Downey) were elected or re-elected to the KJA Board of Governors.

Bahe Cook Cantley & Jones attorney Larry Jones has been re-appointed to serve another term on the University of Kentucky College of Law Board of Directors. The Board is made up of some of Kentucky's most prominent attorneys, Supreme Court Justices, Court of Appeals Judges, Circuit Court Judges, and District Court Judges.

Vanessa Cantley, a partner at Louisville, Kentucky civil litigation firm Bahe Cook Cantley & Jones PLC, has been asked to serve as an Adjunct Professor of Law at the University of Louisville School of Law.

Ms. Cantley will be teaching Civil Litigation Skills to second and third-year law students beginning in Fall 2009. Civil Litigation Skills is a new course, designed to provide students with a realistic pretrial experience--which had been largely missing from the curriculum--through the use of readings, class discussions and skills exercises. By handling a civil case from its inception through jury selection, students will learn the basic rules, procedures, tactics and skills necessary to prepare a civil lawsuit for settlement or trial.

With the assistance of the Kentucky Justice Association, Ms. Cantley has scheduled some of the most well-respected civil practitioners, judges and mediators from across the Commonwealth to speak to the students throughout the semester.

Vanessa Cantley, a partner at Bahe Cook Cantley & Jones PLC in Louisville, Kentucky, was recently appointed by of University of Louisville School of Law Dean Jim Chen to serve on the law Alumni Council. The Council is comprised of well-respected members of the legal community, including members of the judiciary. Ms. Cantley’s term on the council will expire in 2012.

Louisville, Kentucky attorney Will Nefzger of Bahe Cook Cantley & Jones PLC will be arguing a case at the Kentucky Supreme Court this fall. Nefzger's client was seriously injured on her way home from the Louisville International Airport when the driver of a pickup truck slammed into the rear of her vehicle. The pickup truck driver was on his cell phone when the accident occurred. The injured client suffered a torn rotator cuff and two ruptured discs in her neck. The injuries have required two separate surgeries thus far.

The issue to be decided by the Kentucky Supreme Court deals with whether the injured client was within the course and scope of her employment when the accident occurred, and therefore, entitled to workers' compensation benefits. The Kentucky Court of Appeals unanimously (3-0) decided in favor of Nefzger's client holding that she was within the course and scope of her employment and etitled to workers' compensation benefits.

This will be Nefzger's second trip to the Kentucky Supreme Court over his nine years of practice. In the first case that went up to the state's higest court, argued and decided in 2008, Nefzger won a unanimous (7-0) decision reversing the Kentucky Court of Appeals.

Brent T. Ackerson has been appointed by the Louisville Bar Association to another term on the Kentucky Lawyer Referral Service Committee. The Committee serves in a board capacity for the Kentucky Lawyer Referral Service, which helps people find answers to their legal questions and quality legal representation for their legal needs.
