Police are reporting that a truck driver was texting when his truck rear-ended a school bus in Indianapolis on Thursday. Nine elementary school students were injured in that crash.
Truck driver Michael Mattingly “said he had just received a text and was reading it.” He was was cited for texting while driving and will have to pay a fine unless he contests the ticket. If this account is accurate, he will also be liable for the children’s injuries, including medical bills and pain and suffering. While it is certainly fortunate no one was more seriously injured or killed, this needs to be a wake-up call for Mattingly and everyone else who thinks it is fine to “check” a text message while driving. Even the slightest glance away from the road can end in tragedy.
