Suit Filed Over Handcuffing Of First Grader
In a bizarre allegation the family of Chicago Public Schools elementary school student is accusing an on-campus security guard of handcuffing her son and detaining him for more than an hour. This set of facts may not, at first blush, seem particularly strange, it must be noted that the chilled involved was a first-grader last year at Carver Primary School!
Ms. LaShanda Smith alleges that campus security personnel “acted in conscious disregard” of her son’s safety when he handcuffed him following an incident on campus.
A spokesperson for the school has said school officials have not yet seen the complaint and need to review it before commenting.
The lawsuit stated that the boy in question was handcuffed for more than an hour, suffering injuries that were both “permanent” and “personal.” It is unclear at this point what the specific injuries that he suffered are.
The lawsuit describes the guard's action as “reckless” and accuses campus officials of providing “untrained and unqualified persons for the tasks of disciplining, restraining, controlling and ensuring the safety of students …” This strange nature of this story make this a story worth following; updates will be provided as they are available.
