Fatal Crash Involving LMPD Van on Smyrna Road

Local news agencies are reporting that a man was killed in a wreck Friday involving an unmarked police van on Smyrna Road at Vandre Avenue.

An off-duty LMPD police officer was driving an unmarked Dodge Caravan when it collided with a Ford Taurus about 3:30 p.m. The driver of the car, believed to be in his late 60s or early 70s, was taken to University of Louisville Hospital, where he died.

The police officer had two children in the van at the time. All were taken to hospitals with non life-threatening injuries, as was a passenger in the other car. The LMPD traffic unit is investigating the crash along with the police public integrity unit.

Nathan Williams, an attorney with Bahe Cook Cantley & Nefzger, says, "Anytime you have a wreck with a fatality or serious injury it is imperative that the family hire their own accident reconstructionist to examine the scene and vehicles involved. It is important that this happens quickly so evidence isn't lost or destroyed. In addition, people should understand that an attorney who specializes in serious personal injury claims will also be able to provide advice on how to deal with potential issues that may arise with different types of insurance coverage and subrogation issues with Medicare or other types of health insurance. The issues involved in these types of cases can often be much more complex than they seem on the surface. Our hearts certainly go out to all those involved and affected by this tragedy."
