CDC Campaigns To Reduce Teen Car Accident Deaths
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has begun a campaign called Parents are the Key to Safe Teen Drivers. Car accidents are the number one cause of deaths in the United States among teenagers. They account for around 3000 teenage deaths per year. The rate is so high for the obvious reason: inexperience.
Some of the statistics the CDC provides include:
- Teenage drivers are four times more likely to crash a vehicle than older drivers;
- The risk of a car accident increases when a teenage driver has other teens in the car. Almost 2 out of 3 teen car wreck deaths that involve a 16 year old occur when he or she has another teenage passenger;
- The risk of a car accident increases almost twofold at night.
The CDC campaign suggests that parents have the greatest influence over their teenager's driving habits and can play a key role in the prevention of a car accident. The first step is to have an open dialogue. The CDC suggest an extended period supervision, setting rules and vigilant enforcement. Further information and resources can be found at the CDC's website.
