Kentucky Car Accidents: Centers For Disease Control And Prevention Features Information About Older Drivers
I subscribe to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) e-mail list and found a recent release of information interesting and relevant to Kentucky residents, especially seniors. Basically, the risk of being seriously injured or killed in a car accident increases dramatically after age 75. I don't think that would be much of a surprise to most people. Car wrecks are second behind only falls as the leading cause of unintentional death for those over 65 years of age. That may be a little more surprising
Here is some advice for older drivers from the CDC:
- Review your prescription and over-the-counter medicine with your doctor or pharmacist for possible side effects and interactions that would affect driving ability;
- Get regular eye exams and religiously wear glasses or contact lenses, if prescribed;
- Plan your route ahead of time;
- Begin leaving larger distances between your car and those in front of you;
- Avoid and eliminate potential distractions in your car; and
- Consider driving alternatives, such as walking, riding with a friend or family member and public transportation.
