Seven-car Pileup in Fayette County Injures Five People; Alcohol May Have Been a Factor

A seven-car crash on Winchester Road at New Circle Road in Lexington injured five people on Friday when a maroon minivan, headed outbound on Winchester Road with its headlights off, ran a red light and hit a grey Chevy Astro minivan. The Astro, heading inbound on Winchester Road, was turning left onto New Circle. The other cars involved ran into the accident scene on inbound Winchester Road.

Larry E. Camelin Jr., 37, who was driving the maroon minivan, was taken to University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital and will be charged with driving under the influence based on officers' observations at the scene of the accident, Lt. Chris Van Brackel said.

The driver of the Astro was also taken to the UK hospital, with injuries including a fractured femur, Van Brackel said.

If the driver was driving under the influence, not only would he be liable for injuries to others resulting from the wreck, but he also may face punitive damages (damages designed to punish and deter similar conduct) if claims against him ever reach a jury.
