Another Deadly Week on Kentucky's Roadways
It was another deadly week for motorists on Kentucky's roadways. According to data collected by Kentucky State Police, ten people died in ten separate crashes in Kentucky from Monday, Oct. 18, through Sunday, Oct. 24, 2010.
Seven of the crashes involved motor vehicles and six of the victims were not wearing seat belts. Single-fatality crashes occurred in Adair, Breathitt, Hardin, Jefferson (2), Laurel, and Lincoln counties. The suspected use of alcohol was a factor in the Adair and Lincoln County crashes.
One motorcycle involved fatal crash occurred in Shelby County and the victim was wearing a helmet.
One pedestrian involved fatal crash occurred in Bell County.
One ATV fatal crash occurred in Leslie County and the victim was not wearing a helmet. The suspected use of alcohol is a factor in this crash.
Through Oct. 24, preliminary statistics indicate that 616 people have lost their lives on Kentucky roadways during 2010. This is 26 less fatalities than reported for the same time period in 2009.
There were 475 motor vehicle fatalities and 247 of those victims were believe to not be wearing seat belts. Sixty-seven of those crashes involved a commercial motor vehicle. Forty-seven fatal crashes involved a pedestrian and two involved a scooter. Seventy-four crashes involved a motorcycle and forty-two of those victims were not wearing helmets.
Thirteen crashes involved an ATV and eleven victims were not wearing helmets. Five crashes involved a bicycle. A total of 125 fatalities have resulted from crashes involving the suspected use of alcohol.
