Johnson and Johnson issues recall for DePuy Hip Implants

DePuy Orthopedics, a division of Johnson and Johnson, has issued a recall of its ASR XL Acetabular System for Total Hip Replacement. The hip implants have the potential to shed metal particles into the patients, which can cause serious and painful reactions.

The recall was issued after discovering that “more people than expected” experienced pain and other symptoms. Some patients even needed to have a second hip replacement surgery.

DePuy has issued a recall guide to assist with this process. DePuy stated that the “recall means additional testing and treatment may be necessary to ensure the hip is functioning well” and “in some cases, patients may need additional surgery.”
