Hazard, Kentucky Head-On Collision Results in Death, Injury

A head-on car accident in Hazard, Kentucky ended tragically with the death of one person and injury to another.

The two vehicle head-on collision occurred on Smithboro Road (KY 15) near the Perry and Knott County line. According to Kentucky State Police, a red Pontiac passenger car being drive by 48 year-old Terry L. Lucas of the Pistol City community of Letcher County was traveling north on Highway 15 when his vehicle crossed the center line and collided head-on with a grey 2005 Ford pick-up driven by Brandon Howard of the Chavies community of Perry County.

Reportedly, the impact of the collision resulted in the Ford truck rolling over and catching fire. Mr. Lucas, who police believe was not wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Knott County Coroner. Mr. Howard, who was wearing a seat belt, was removed from the burning vehicle by a passing motorist & was transported to the Whitesburg ARH Emergency Room by the Knott County Tran-Star Ambulance service, where he was treated and released. No criminal charges have been filed, and state police are conducting an accident reconstruction.
