Lexus Fire Problems Force Recall as Toyota's Troubles Continue
The wave of Toyota recent recalls grew larger Saturday as the company was forced to recall of 17,000 Lexus HS 250h sedans due to their potential to leak fuel and potentially catch fire during rear-end collisions . The problem now faced by the Lexus sedans is similar to the problems that plagued the Ford Pinto.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) issued the recall filing Friday, according to the Los Angeles Times. After conducting its own independent testing of the sedans, NHTSA discovered that the vehicles leak more than the federally allowed amount of fuel when involved in a rear-end collision. Although no injuries have been reported to NHTSA to date, similar problems with the Ford Pinto in the late 1970's are widely believed to have contributed to at least 27 deaths.
While most Toyota and Lexus product lines have had some type of recall over since last fall, this recall is the second stright recall where an independent party discovered a problem that Toyota's internal safety testing didn't. The Lexus GX 460 was recalled in April after Consumer Reports magazine discovered a handling problem with thr car through their testing.
In addition to the recall, Toyota has stopped all sales of its 2010 Lexus HS 250h hybrid until a fix for the problem can be found.
