Walmart Knowingly Sold Toxic Miley Cyrus Jewelry, Has to Pull Product From Shelves
Walmart has pulled cadmium-tainted Miley Cyrus children's jewelry from the shelves, even though it knowingly sold the dangerous jewelry for months, the Associated Press reports.
Long-term exposure to cadmium can lead to bone softening and kidney failure. As a known carcinogen, cadmium can also hinder brain development in young children. Although cadmium won't absorb through the skin, it is dangerous if the jewelry is bitten on or sucked, as smaller children are prone to do.
Walmart learned that the Miley Cyrus bracelets and an unrelated line of bracelet charms contained cadmium as far back as February but continued to sell the items.Exactly how many of the items have been sold was unclear. While the Miley Cyrus jewelry hit the shelves in December, the charms - also available exclusively at Walmart stores - were sold under the name "Fashion Accessories," and it is unknown when they began appearing on shelves.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has issued two more recalls - for charm bracelets sold at Claire's and at Dollar N More stores. An agency spokesman said there will be more recalls in the future.
