Toyota Pays $16.4 Million Fine Over Acceleration Problems, More Penalties a Possibility
Toyota has paid the largest civil penalty assessed by the government against a car company, the New York Times reports.
Due to a sluggish response to sudden acceleration problems, Toyota has been assessed a $16.4 million fine.
The Department of Transportation stated that Toyota failed to promptly notify the government when it learned of similar problems with vehicles elsewhere in the world. As a result of Toyota's failures, the Department "is reviewing thousands of Toyota documents and could issue new penalties for the company's handling of other safety recalls."
The Toyota recalls have been the subject of Congressional hearings and Toyota still faces multiple lawsuits over the problems. Since the fall, Toyota has recalled more than nine million vehicles.
