BP Top Kill Method Fails: More Oil to Spill in Gulf
British Petroleum announced on Saturday that its "Top Kill" method of stopping the oil leak had failed. The top kill was BP's attempt to plug the Gulf of Mexico oil leak by pumping mud into the well. More than 1.2 million gallons of mud was used, but most of it escaped out of the damaged riser. Next up is the Lower Marine Riser Package (LMRP) Cap procedure, which is one of several containment contingency options. The device would collect oil leaking from the top of the blow-out preventer.
We all hope that BP comes up with a solution soon. This is already the worst oil spill in United States history --and it continues to flow into the Gulf. Frankly, it is amazing that BP didn't have a viable emergency plan in place long before now.
