Twitter At Center Of Lawsuit

One of the county’s largest “social networking sites,” Twitter is now at the center of a lawsuit between one high-school student and an “unknown” defendant. In hindsight the suit may not come as a surprise to many as sites such as Twitter that connect people in real-time over the internet have become fantastically popular over the last few years, and are largely unregulated by any supervising authority. The student who filed the lawsuit is suing to uncover an apparent impersonation on Twitter.

Late last month, the student at the middle of this matter was threatened from other students who attend a rival school. The threats were in response to supposed racially charges remarks the plaintiff made on his Twitter site. However, the plaintiff denies every making such comments, and accuses another person of impersonating him and making said remarks. Both students involved are members of their high school basketball teams, and the comments were made following a game between the two schools in which Garfield lost.

The student sought legal counsel and is now suing the unknown person and as part of that process has issued a subpoena to Twitter to find out who created the account. In a response Twitter has preliminarily indicated that the company would release the information being sought.
No trial date has been set for the case.
