Lawsuit Over Radiation Leak Settled
A 1997 lawsuit claiming that radiation leaks effected homeowners’ property values in Western Kentucky has settled for 1.75 million dollars. The suit was filed over water leaks from a Western Kentucky uranium enrichment plant, which homeowners claimed contaminated the air and water of the surrounding properties. The suit claimed that property owners were sickened, well water was contaminated, and the area suffered loss of crops, plants, livestock, and wildlife. The settlement funds are intended to compensate between 70 to 80 property owners, each of which will receive 11 percent of the value of their land, based upon 1999 appraisal done in conjunction with the suit.
