Munfordville, Kentucky Wreck On I-65 Results In 11 Deaths And Two Injuries
The wreck that occurred in Hart County, Kentucky near Munfordville happened when a semi-tractor trailer crossed the median, broke through cable barriers and crashed into a van with 12 people. The van driver and passengers were all Mennonites, many of them from the same family, from Marrowbone, Kentucky and were on there way to a wedding in Iowa. Two young children, who were in child seats in the van, survived with relatively minor injuries. The truck driver and 10 people in the van lost their lives in the fiery crash.
I was on my way to Memphis, TN for a deposition in one of my cases on Friday traveling southbound on I-65 from Louisville and came upon the scene. The pictures above were taken by me. Traffic was snarled to a crawl even in the southbound lanes that were not affected because of the accident reconstruction effort taking place by the Kentucky State Police.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation and yet to be determined. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has opened an investigation into what is surely the deadliest crash in Kentucky since the 1988 Carrollton bus crash that claimed 27 lives.
Our sympathies and condolences go out to the friends and family of the deceased and injured victims. These deaths unfortunately add to the increasing number of fatalities on Kentucky roadways as I have been reporting on here at kentuckyinjurylawyerblog.com. Witnessing the scene has really stuck with me. I can't get over he shear randomness and chance of this collision occurring and claiming so many lives. It makes you wish that the family had left a little sooner or later, or driven a little slower of faster, and then they would all be in Iowa celebrating a wedding. Instead, their families and relatives are planning a funeral.
A crash like this raises many questions, such as whether there are causes other than driver error. It is imperative that a full investigation take place to determine if there were any factors at play causing this tragedy that are not readily apparent and to preserve evidence.
Although the KSP and NTSB are conducting investigations to determine the cause, and they typically good job, it is often important for someone involved in this type of accident to do their own investigation.
