Illinois Man Settles Case Against Chicago Board Of Education For $14.7 Million

An Illinois man who was injured on a mini-trampoline when he was a middle-school student at a South Side elementary school has settled a lawsuit with the Chicago Board of Education and a private youth center for almost $14.7 million. The injury happened approximately eighteen (18) years ago.

Ryan Murray, who had just entered his teenage years, was injured while taking part in a “tumbling” class on Dec. 14, 1992, at what was then Bryn Mawr Elementary School, Murray, now 30, was apparently attempting to complete a flip off of the trampoline and hit his head on a mat on the floor of the school’s gym. Unfortunately, Mr. Murray’s injuries proved to be severe as, after hitting his head in this fashion, he became a quadriplegic, which is the condition he has remained in to the present day.

The class was an extracurricular activity held during Murray's lunch period. It made use of a mini-trampoline owned by the Chicago Public Schools and was supervised by an employee of the Chicago Youth Centers,
