Lawsuits Filed Against Manufacturer of Heparin

At least 30 lawsuits have been filed in Chicago by injured people or their estates against Baxter International, Inc. due to claims of allergic reactions suffered after taking the popular blood thinning drug, Heparin. Baxter recalled the drug after reports of reactions to it began surfacing in 2008.

Allen Schwartz of Kralovec, Jambois & Schwartz said that approximately three hundred (300) lawsuits have been filed against the Deerfield, Illinois-based company. It appears that the problems may stem from tainted ingredients that were included in the drug and originated from China. “This is an actual contaminant that got into the product,” Schwartz said.

It is interesting to note that Baxter supplied about 50 percent of the blood thinner and anticoagulant used in the entire Unites States of America. The company began a recall only after other drug manufacturers were able to fulfill the void in the national supply that taking Heparin off the market would leave.

“We deeply regret any impact the 2008 heparin contamination situation may have had on patients and family members,” representatives said in a statement. The complaints accuse Baxter and the supplier, Scientific Protein Laboratories LLC, of negligence, alleging their products were unsafe for their intended use.
