Johnson & Johnson Announces Several Recalls
Recently McNeil Consumer Healthcare, a division of Johnson & Johnson, announced the recall of several hundred batches of many of its most profitable over-the-counter medications, including Simply Sleep, St. Joseph Aspirin, Benadryl, Motrin, Rolaids and even Tylenol.
Unfortunately for the public the recall came almost two (2) years after the company began receiving complaints about odd smelling bottles of Tylenol Arthritis Relief caplets. According to a letter that was sent by the Food and Drug Administration (“FDA”) that since that time almost two (2) years ago consumers have also reported digestive problems like nausea, vomiting and stomach pain.
The letter sent to McNeil by the FDA was harsh in its criticism of the companies corporate behavior. The document outlines is displeasure that McNeil did not conduct a timely, “comprehensive” investigation, did not quickly identify the source of the problem, and did not notify authorities in a timely fashion. This behavior is not the kind of corporate responsibility that is encouraged by this administration and has resulted in prolonging consumer exposure to the products the letter stated.
McNeil’s rather plodding response to consumer complaints is out of character for one of the most trusted corporate brands in America, the maker of long-held products like Johnson’s Baby Shampoo and Band-Aids.
“We’re conscious of the fact that people expect more of us,” spokeswoman, Bonnie Jacobs responded. “McNeil Consumer Healthcare has applied broad criteria to identify and remove all product lots that it believes may have the potential to be affected, even if they have not been the subject of consumer complaints.
The company, despite its late response, has not set up a website at, www.McNeilProductRecall.com, which provides the list of recalled products. Those interested in this recall may also call 888-222-6036 to ask about a refund or replacement of recalled products.
