Verdict in Kentucky Comair Case
The family of a Comair Flight 5191 crash victim was compensated with a $7.1 million by a federal jury. The widow and two daughters of Bryan Keith Woodward, who was 39 when he died in the Aug. 27, 2006, crash at Blue Grass Airport, are the only family members of the 47 crash victims who declined to settle with the Cincinnati-based airline.
Of the $7.1 million award, $5 million was awarded to the daughters for their loss of affection and companionship. The eight-member jury awarded $1.35 million for the destruction of Woodward's ability to earn money and $750,000 for his conscious pain and suffering during the crash.
The Comair jet crashed into a grassy field and burst into flames after taking off from the wrong runway — a general aviation strip too short for commercial jets. The only survivor was the co-pilot.
A separate jury trial to determine whether Comair is guilty of gross negligence, and whether punitive damages should be awarded. That trial will likely take place in a few months.
