Louisville Metro Police Shoot Driver Who Sped Through Accident Scene
Louisville Metro Police officers apparently fired several shots at a man who they say drove through an accident scene earlier today, allegedly endangering their safety. In the early morning hours a woman driving a pickup truck was involved in an accident when she ran over a concrete parking block after leaving a local restaurant. LMPD suspects that alcohol was involved. While investigating this accident, another vehicle, a Toyota Avalon, drove through the scene investigation allegedly "putting officers in danger," according to Dwight Mitchell, a spokesperson for LMPD.
At that point LMPD and Hollow Creek Police Department officers pursued the Toyota. At some point the driver of the Toyota was shot by officers three or four times. Why the shootings were necessary or justified is not yet known. Despite being shot, the driver of the Toyota was able to get back in the car and continued to drive several more blocks before hitting a telephone pole. The driver and several officers were treated for non-life threatening injuries.
The officers involved in the shooting have been placed on non-payed administrative leave until the shooting is investigated. We are still waiting on word of why the driver was shot several times by police officers. Other than driving through the accident scene, it is not clear that the driver of the Toyota intentionally tried to injure or kill any police officers. We will try to keep you up to date on the details of this investigation.
