Fatal Car Accident in Sellersburg, Indiana: James and Thelma Jewell Killed

Sellersburg, Indiana police are reporting that a fatal accident this afternoon shut down I-65 South near the 32-mile marker. A red Ford pickup driven by 30 year-old Jennifer Just was northbound on I-65 when it rear-ended a 2003 Toyota pickup driven by 85 year-old James Jewell and carrying his wife, 75 year-old Thelma Jewell. The impact caused Mr. Jewell to lose control of his vehicle and cross over the median into the southbound lanes of I-65. The Jewells were hit head-on by a semi-truck traveling on I-65 South and killed.

Vanessa Cantley, partner at Bahe Cook Cantley & Jones, is an experienced Indiana trial attorney who represents hundreds of victims of tragic car wrecks. She comments: "This wreck happened right near my childhood home. My heart goes out to the Jewell family's loved ones and friends. If reports from local police are correct, this appears to have been a completely avoidable tragedy. Road and atmospheric conditions do not seem to have played a role. It was most likely a case where Ms. Just was following too closely and simply not paying attention when she crashed into the Jewells. In cases like this, it is important to retain an experienced accident reconstructionist to assist with the investigation. When I handle cases like this, one of the first things I always want to determine is whether talking on a cell phone or texting was a factor. In addition to being held accountable for damages designed to compensate the Jewell family for this tragedy, people who cause tragic wrecks while talking on the phone or texting may also be subject to punitive damages designed to punish them for such reckless conduct."
