Louisville, Kentucky Streets Rank Seventh Most Dangerous In The Nation For Pedestrians

A study by Transportation for America and Surface Transportation Policy Project advocacy groups ranked the 13 county Louisville, Kentucky area as the seventh most dangerous for people walking the streets. A report prepared and released showed that 48 people were fatally injured in the Louisville area when struck as a pedestrian by a vehicle during the study period. The number accounted for 14 percent of all traffic fatalities, above the national average of 12 percent.

While this report is not good news for public safety in the Louisville area, Kentucky State Police data does show that fatalities from car wrecks involving pedestrians in Jefferson County have reached a nearly ten year low. The raw numbers demonstrate that in 2009 thus far, seven pedestrians in Louisville have been killed in car wrecks (334 total wrecks have involved pedestrians), which is down from 18 at the same time in 2008 (424 total wrecks involved pedestrians), and 11 in 2007 (405 total wrecks involved pedestrians).

Folks, this is a matter of public safety that should concern all of us. All of us can and need to do a better job taking care when walking and driving to avoid these needless tragedies. I'm convinced that if we all just start paying a little better attention and focus on what we're doing, we can drastically reduce theses numbers.
