But I Thought I Had Full Coverage: Do You Know What Your Auto Insurance Covers?

It happend to you: you were in a car accident and now you don't know where to turn. How will I get the car fixed? Will I get a rental car in the meantime? I'm hurt but I don't have health insurance, so who will pay my medical bills? The other driver didn't have any insurance - what does that mean? You tell yourself you have "full coverage" so everything should be fine, but is it?

Automobile insurance is more complicated than mant people might think. What is commonly referred to as "full coverage" means different things to different people, so saying that you have full coverage might mean you have a lot less than you think. Most major auto insurance carriers have almost a dozen different types of coverage that they may or may not include in their definition of "full coverage." An understanding of the various types of coverage will help you choose what coverages you do and don't want and make sure you understand what is and what isn't covered on your policy.

Have you heard of Personal Injury Protection (PIP) or No-Fault coverage? Comprehensive coverage? Added Reparation Benefits coverage? Uninsured Motorists Coverage? Underinsured Motorists Coverage? Do you have any clue whether you are covered for any of these or several other types of loss that can occur becuase of a car accident? In a series of blog posts, we will examine each of the major kinds of coverage available to you in Kentucky, why each is important, whether each is legally required to drive in Kentucky, whether each is legally required to be offered by your insurance company, and other issues.
