Family of student killed by VH1 semi settles case

The family of a 19 year old student at Southern Illinois University, Kevetta Davis, has settled a lawsuit against the company behind VH1’s reality series “Rock of Love with Brett Michaels” for $6.5 million. Kevetta was studying to be a pharmacist at the school. She and a friend Yasmin Jackson, also of Illinois, were killed when the driver of the truck fell asleep on the highway and then crossed the center of the road, crashing into the car and killing both girls.

These types of accidents, known as “cross-over” accidents, occur when a vehicle coming one way on a street crosses over into the oncoming lane or lanes of traffic, usually resulting in a head on collision. When these accidents take place on high speed roads like expressways, or when they involve large vehicles like semi trucks, the results of the accident are almost always catastrophic and frequently involve a death. Cross-over accidents can occur from driver fatigue, as in Kevetta’s case, drunk driving, or just plain inattention.

Unfortunately, with the number of large trucks on America’s highways these days, “cross-over” accidents are all too common. Fortunately, for Kentucky drivers, after years of horrific cross-over accidents, several miles of cross-over barriers have been installed on our expressways in the median between opposite lanes of traffic. These barriers are put in place to prevent careless drivers from crossing over the median and injuring or killing other, innocent drivers.
