A southern Indiana man is facing criminal charges stemming from allegations that he may have sexually molested minor children in a daycare his mother operated out of her home in Sellersburg, Indiana. The local news is reporting that Brandon Nevils has been arrested following reports from four minors that he forced them to engage in inappropriate sexual touching at the home of his mother, Grace Nevils.

Vanessa Cantley is an Indiana-licensed attorney, partner with Bahe Cook Cantley & Nefzger and former mental health counselor for children who have been victims of sexual abuse. This is her take:

“If the allegations of these children are found to be true, Mr. Nevils has committed a horrendous crime and betrayal of trust. My heart goes out to these children and their families as they begin the long road to recovery and healing. I spent several years counseling children who had been victims of sexual abuse. I have seen firsthand the tremendous damage that can be done when a child’s innocence is taken in this way. I grew up in Sellersburg and graduated from Silver Creek High School. It breaks my heart that something like this could happen in my hometown. Sellersburg is a tight-knit community. I hope everyone will rally around the victims and support them. Coming forward with allegations of sexual abuse is extremely difficult. They are very brave and I applaud them.”

“Of course, the victims are going to be key witnesses in the criminal prosecution of Mr. Nevils. However, legally, they may be entitled to monetary compensation through the civil justice system. If the allegations are true, not only should Mr. Nevils have to pay compensation to the victims for the damages he has caused, but Ms. Nevils may also be liable for negligent supervision of the children since they were in her care at the time the events are alleged to have occurred. It will be important to conduct a thorough investigation into the facts and circumstances surrounding the allegations so that the children can seek monetary recovery from any party who may be responsible for what happened to them.”

“For example, I am litigating a sexual abuse case in Clark Circuit Court right now. The Defendant was sentenced to 10 years in prison for sexually molesting my client. Now we are asking the Court to award significant monetary damages against him to pay for the years of counseling and treatment she will need to recover from the abuse and for the pain and anguish she has suffered and will continue to suffer every day.”
