Fatal, Multiple Injury Auto Accident in Woodford County, Kentucky

The Lexington Herald-Leader is reporting a tragic, deadly head-on crash between an SUV and a pickup in Woodford County, Kentucky. Two people are reportedly dead, and six were injured in the auto wreck outside of Versailles, Kentucky on Sunday night.

The names of the deceased and the names of most of the injured, have not been released.

According to the report, a Chevrolet S-10 pickup was headed south on Shannon Run Road near Dry Ridge Road when the driver crossed the center line and hit a northbound Ford Expedition head-on, according to the Versailles Police Department. The Expedition landed on the shoulder of the road on its roof; the Chevy spun around and stopped in the road.

The driver and a passenger in the Chevy were pronounced dead at the scene. A third passenger in the Chevy, along with all five occupants of the Expedition, were taken to University of Kentucky Medical Center.

According to police in Versailles, Kentucky, it appears as if all six injury victims taken to UK will survive.

The driver of the Expedition has been identified as Cindy Gaines of Versailles, Kentucky who was reported to be in fair condition at UK on Monday night. According to reports, she and the four other women in the Expedition were on their way to play bingo at the time of the wreck. Police believe all of the women live in Versailles, although two of them had identification indicating that they are from Michigan.

Police believe alcohol might have been a factor in the wreck.

According to Vanessa Cantley, a Kentucky attorney who handles automobile injury cases, "impaired drivers kill 13,000 people each year in the U.S. In Kentucky alone last year, there were approximately 6,000 alcohol-related car wrecks, resulting in over 2,200 injuries and 182 deaths."
