Unsafe conditions for Louisville Arena workers?

The new Louisville Arena is an exciting addition to downtown Louisville. However, reportedly, rumors have been circulating regarding possible unsafe conditions for the construction workers involved with the project. On April 27, 2009, a partial floor collapsed during a concrete pour leading to injuries of three workers. After an investigation, an engineer concluded that the subcontractor did not properly install temporary support posts and left out almost two dozen posts. The state conducted an investigation that has yet to be released.

After this accident, a former arena worker made statements regarding the lack of safety at the worksite. The Louisville Arena Authority’s general counsel, Frost Brown Todd, was then hired to conduct an investigation on the safety complaints. The five paragraph report concluded that there were no problems with the safety of the construction of the arena.

Questions are arising as to the detail and length of the report. The scope of the investigation is greatly unknown. The number of employees interviewed and the identities of the employees were not given. Initially the report was not going to be made public until a newspaper requested it.

While the new arena is exciting for the city of Louisville, it needs to be built in a safe manner for the construction workers involved. Hopefully, the collapsed floor will be the only workplace accident that occurs.
