Report Claims 16% of Kentucky Drivers are Uninsured
A new report illustrates a scary new trend: a startling 16% of Kentucky drivers are uninsured, ranking the state twelfth in the nation for uninsured drivers. Similiarly, 14% of Indiana drivers are uninsured motorists. Experts blame the numbers on the worsening economy, but remind motorists that insurance coverage is legally mandatory and protects your car and yourself.
What does that mean for you? With more uninsured motorists on the road, more people may be forced to take legal action to recover damages should a car accident occur. Also, to protect yourself, you should make sure that you have uninsured motorist coverage (and under-insured motorist coverage) on your auto policies. Uninsured motorist coverage is relatively inexpensive, and it covers you up to the limits of your policy in the event that you are injured by a negligent driver who is uninsured in a motorcycle, truck or car accident. Underinsured motorist coverage will protect you in the event you are seriously injured and the negligent driver has the minimum coverage ($25,000 under Kentucky law) or insufficient coverage to fully cover your losses.
Because car wrecks can be financially devastating on a family, especially if the primary breadwinner is unable to work for any significant period, a person should purchase as much uninsured motorist and under-insured motorist coverage as the insurance company is willing to sell them.
